Multiscale failure analysis of fiber-reinforced composite structures via a hybrid cohesive/volumetric nonlinear homogenization strategy

Abstract. In this work, a novel multiscale model for softening periodic microstructures is proposed, relying on nonlinear homogenization method combined with cohesive/volumetric finite element model. This strategy able to overcome the mesh sensitivity issues usually experienced by purely volumetric techniques in presence of strain localization. As main ingredient proposed approach, microscopically informed traction-separation law embedded interfaces extracted, starting from homogenized bulk behavior obtained suitably chosen Repeating Unit Cell (RUC) subjected different macro-strain paths. The present approach has been fully validated performing several numerical simulations damage phenomena fiber-reinforced composite structures, special reference transverse micro-cracking. Finally, investigate reliability and accuracy model, comparison direct performed meshed specimens presented, terms both load-displacement curves associated crack patterns.
